PIPA Amendments Take Effect
03-May-10In an e-mail alert on February 26, 2010, we advised you about Bill 54, which made some significant changes to the Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA).
The amendments came into force on May 1, 2010. The most significant changes to PIPA are those which require notification of privacy breaches. These amendments mean that all organizations are now required to report privacy breaches to the Commissioner where there is "a real risk of significant harm" to individuals as a result of the breach. These notification requirements are the first of their kind in Canada.
Please review our February 26, 2010 E-mail Alert for a description of other amendments to the legislation.
