Blake Hafso

Blake is not afraid to ask the difficult questions and go beyond surface level analysis to get to the root of a problem. With the belief that the best results come from good communication and strong preparation, he works closely with clients to resolve matters in a pragmatic and efficient manner. 

Blake is a tenacious litigator, with a focus on employment related issues, particularly Workers Compensation Board claims. He has a passion for workers compensation matters and ensuring employer's rights are properly respected. His success in WCB claims can be attributed to his in-depth knowledge in the highly specialized field as well as his extensive experience. 

Blake’s employment law practice includes representing employers in matters involving wrongful dismissal litigation, human rights complaints, fiduciary litigation, employment standards claims and disputes involving the enforcement of restrictive covenants. He also assists employers with employee discipline and termination, managing employee disability, conducting workplace investigations, and drafting employment contracts and policies.

Blake’s litigation experience extends to construction litigation, business and shareholder disputes, and insurance defence. He has represented and advised clients in construction related collections such as lien claimants and other construction cases including contractual disputes, injunctive relief, breaches of fiduciary duty, negligent construction, builders’ lien claims, shareholder disputes and professional negligence claims.

In his insurance practice Blake represents a wide range of national and international insurers in relation to all forms of insurance related litigation. His insurance defence experience includes serious bodily injury claims, construction and fire losses, coverage opinions, directors’ and officers’ claims and inter-provincial coverage issues.

Further, Blake is skilled in commercial litigation. He has worked on the full spectrum of debt collections issues involving security claims, priority claims, secured recovery of vehicles or other serial number goods, and reciprocal judgment enforcement. He has undertaken secured and unsecured debt recovery in the context of insolvent parties, bankruptcy, consumer proposals, and when competing with other secured parties.

Assured and imposing in the courtroom, Blake has acted as counsel in matters before the Alberta Provincial Court, the Alberta Court of Queen’s Bench, the Alberta Court of Appeal, the Supreme Court of Canada, the WCB Appeals Commission, the Alberta Human Rights Commission, the AISH Appeals Secretariat, a number of other administrative bodies, and various alternative dispute resolution proceedings.

Blake makes a point of staying on top of the developments in the law and the business environment. This includes both social, political, and technological change. He regularly presents on legal updates and topics of interest to his clients. Additionally, Blake regularly attends charitable events and is a member of the Calgary Construction Association.
