Evan is an accomplished lawyer with a passion for the dynamic and evolving field of energy law. Committed to building rapport, understanding, and advocating for his clients, Evan has established himself as a distinguished advisor and trusted legal counsel. His dedication to client success proves he is an invaluable legal partner for parties engaged in the energy sector.
With a wide-ranging practice complemented by years of experience, including several years with one of Canada’s largest pipeline utility companies, he maintains a primary focus on energy, environmental, regulatory, and aboriginal law, and regularly represents clients before provincial regulatory tribunals including the Alberta Energy Regulator (and its predecessor), the Alberta Utilities Commission, and the Canada Energy Regulator (and its predecessor). Evan has also appeared before all levels of Court in Alberta as well as the Federal Court of Canada.
In regulatory matters, he is well versed in compliance related issues, as well as navigating the often times complex administrative, regulatory, and environmental framework associated with energy regulation. In this space, he has provided counsel to a quasi-judicial board responsible for the economic regulation of public utilities and assisted in the development and implementation of legal and regulatory strategy for pipelines and other energy projects.
Evan routinely works with project proponents and intervenors in projects related to mining, electrical and oil & gas facilities applications, electricity market, and pipeline matters, including providing comprehensive legal advice on project structuring, land acquisition, and environmental considerations. Notably, he was counsel to the Province of Alberta in respect of the Enbridge Northern Gateway Project and Trans Mountain Reconsideration Process.
As a strategic advisor and experienced negotiator, Evan has assisted all manner of clients in the energy sphere with navigating the regulatory process including securing project approvals and dealing with complex stakeholder issues. His attention to detail and thorough understanding of Canada’s energy regulatory framework ensures favorable outcomes for his clients. When issues arise, he provides legal counsel and strategic business advice that helps his clients achieve their goals. He demonstrates diligence and strategic thinking in developing effective methods of addressing and resolving issues that can arise.
Beyond his law practice, Evan actively engages advocacy efforts through speaking engagements. He collaborates with industry associations and provides insights at various conferences, seminars, and events. He has twice presented papers at the Canadian Energy Law Foundation Annual Jasper Research Seminar, among other industry events.
