Bio
Sue Remmer is a partner, Insurance Practice Group Co-Lead, and experienced mediator based in Calgary. Her practice focuses on insurance disputes, where she is widely respected for her work as both defence counsel and neutral mediator, particularly in complex personal injury matters.
Drawing on decades of experience, Sue takes a practical, solution-oriented approach to dispute resolution, helping parties identify efficient and fair paths to resolution at every stage of a claim.
Mediation is a significant and growing part of Sue’s practice. She is frequently retained to mediate insurance disputes and brings more than 25 years of experience negotiating and resolving claims as counsel. Her mediation work is informed by a deep understanding of insurance litigation dynamics, risk assessment, and the practical realities facing insurers and insureds alike. Sue has completed intensive dispute resolution training through the Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution at Pepperdine University’s Caruso School of Law.
As litigation counsel, Sue regularly handles complex insurance defence matters, including fatality claims, serious personal injury actions, SEF 44 claims, significant fire losses, and property loss disputes. Clients value her ability to identify critical details within complex medical and financial records, and her commitment to understanding the full context of each file through careful analysis and fact development.
When disputes cannot be resolved outside the courtroom, Sue is a strong and effective advocate. She has represented clients before all levels of court in Alberta and is known for delivering thorough, high-quality defences grounded in strategic preparation and clear communication.
Open, consistent communication is central to Sue’s practice, whether she is acting as counsel or mediator. She works closely with clients to assess risk, explore options, and determine the most effective way forward. Known for her warmth and approachability, Sue places a high value on the professional relationships she builds with clients and colleagues. She is committed to mentoring junior lawyers and supporting the development of new talent, and was drawn to McLennan Ross for its strong reputation in insurance defence and collaborative firm culture.
