NWT Minimum Wage Increase
The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) announced on February 2, 2010 that the minimum wage rate in the Northwest Territories (Territories) is to be increased from its current rate of $8.25 an hour, to $10.00 an hour by April 1, 2011.
The wage increase will be introduced in two phases, with the first phase coming this Spring. Effective April 1, 2010, the minimum wage rate throughout the Territories will be $9.00 an hour. The rate will then be increased again on April 1, 2011 when the minimum wage rate will be $10.00 an hour.
This means that all employers with employees making minimum wage rates will be required to make the mandatory adjustments on April 1, 2010 and April 1, 2011, to comply with the new GNWT regulations. These changes will affect nearly all employers throughout the Territories.
