McLennan Ross Sponsors City Art Program

The City of Calgary's Public Art Program and McLennan Ross LLP are pleased to announce the eight artists who will install works as part of the 2010 - 2011 OPEN SPACES: Windows to a View program.

OPEN SPACES provides local artists an opportunity to exhibit their work in the window spaces on the TELUS Convention Centre LRT Platform at 7th Avenue and Centre Street SE. The program celebrates the diversity and quality of Calgary artists while enlivening this downtown transportation hub.

Twenty-six artists applied to the second year of the program through an open call competition in February 2010. The selected artists are:

  • Erin Belanger
  • Doug Driediger
  • Roxanne Driediger
  • Marjan Eggermont
  • Sarah Fuller
  • Daniel Kirk
  • Terry Reynoldson
  • Judy Ueda

Every three months two of the selected artists will design, create and install their work, which is then featured in the windows. The revolving exhibits give local artists an opportunity to present their work to the people of Calgary. "The program is about bringing art into the daily experience of people moving about the city," says Quyen Hoang, program coordinator for The City of Calgary Public Art Program.

McLennan Ross approached the Public Art Program last fall about sponsoring the program. "McLennan Ross is pleased to be supporting the Open Spaces: Windows to a View program" said Gavin Fitch, Partner at the Calgary office. "We feel it is important that the arts and culture scene in Calgary be readily accessible to the community. It is also important to us that the program supports the development of local artists. As a member of the selection committee I was excited to see the variety and depth of artistic talent in the city. McLennan Ross looks forward to continuing to be involved in the program over the coming years."

In the six years since the City approved its Public Art Policy, the Public Art Program has impacted Calgary's visual environment by installing 20 public artworks through the Per Cent for Public Art Funding Strategy. A further 29 installations are currently planned for various locations throughout the city, including LRT stations, parks, public buildings and with civic partners such as the Westside Recreation Centre and the Trico Centre for Family Wellness.
