New Artists Announced for Open Spaces 2011/12

The City of Calgary Public Art Program and McLennan Ross LLP are pleased to announce the new roster of artists for the 2011– 2012 OPEN SPACES: Windows to a View program.

In its third year, OPEN SPACES gives local artists an opportunity to show their work in two window galleries on the TELUS Convention Centre LRT Platform at 7th Avenue and Centre Street SE in downtown Calgary.

Twenty six artists from the Calgary area applied to this year’s open call. The selected artists are:

  • Diana Un-Jin Cho
  • Calgary Clay Arts Association
  • Barbara Hirst
  • Eveline Kolijn
  • Margot van Lindenberg
  • Nate McLeod and Cassandra Paul
  • Roberta Murray
  • Jenna Swift

The exhibits revolve every three months. Each quarter, two selected artists or artist teams design, create and then install their work in the window galleries. The artists welcome the added exposure to their work, while the 11,000 commuters who pass through the platform daily get a chance to learn more about the local arts scene. “We are thrilled with the diversity and quality of the artists selected,” said Public Art Coordinator Quyen Hoang. “The selection represents a diversity of artists, both emerging and established. Beginning in May, the windows will be animated with paintings, photography, installations, textiles and ceramic works.”

“We are delighted to see continued interest in OPEN SPACES,” said Gavin Fitch, partner at McLennan Ross LLP. “We believe it is important that art is made accessible to the community and that everyone has exposure to the Calgary arts scene.”

This is the second year that McLennan Ross LLP has sponsored the program. “We also display OPEN SPACES selections selections in our reception area, and it is great to see how the art gets people talking,” Fitch added.
