MaryAnne Loney brings a unique combination of skills to tax planning and tax dispute resolution. With a business degree and work experience that includes accounting and time at the Department of Justice Canada, she focuses on her clients’ objectives and business goals with a strategic and practical approach to tax law. 

Well-known for her sound and honest tax planning advice, MaryAnne helps her clients evaluate risks and make the right business decisions. She assists owners of small and medium businesses, closely-held family and private corporations, public entities, not-for-profits, charities, partnerships, and trusts. 

She assists with the purchase and sale of businesses and helps estates and individuals with succession strategies to transfer assets and divide matrimonial property in the most tax-efficient way. 

As both a corporate and tax lawyer, MaryAnne handles tax reorganizations and advises on tax considerations for major transactions, helps ensure companies of all sizes are structured in a tax-efficient manner, and plans effective strategies to avoid unnecessary tax expenses.

She has assisted corporations in making large sales as tax-efficient as possible, maximize vendors proceeds, and figure out tax obligations from a payroll and GST perspective. 

MaryAnne also assists charities and not-for-profit organizations to establish good governance, efficiently deal with the Canada Revenue Agency, and comply with their obligations under the Income Tax Act and provincial legislation. She has extensive experience assisting charities register with the CRA and in disputes with the Charities Department.

In tax disputes, her reputation as an effective problem-solver is well-earned. From audit to court, MaryAnne assists clients at all phases of a dispute, objections and appeals to the tax court, as well as dispute resolution with the CRA. 

Articling with the Department of Justice and Public Prosecution Service of Canada gave MaryAnne valuable insight working with tax officials and the CRA that now allows her to find the most efficient and economical solutions to her clients’ tax problems. She has successfully resolved files with justice lawyers and has appeared before the Tax Court of Canada, the Provincial Court, the Alberta King's Bench Master’s Chambers, and the Justice Chambers.
